NUS Singapore Chemical Science Fair

27th March. It's a day that we have been working hard for with our poster on Drug Discovery.

Shaun and I spent our time plucking flowers for Dr Subra. That's the project I'm referring to. Thank you Jia Qi and Francis too. They helped us plucked some of the flowers. Shaun left for Thailand for OIPP, leaving Yesika and I to present our poster.

I wanted to make a model badly and I spent an hour at Popular, brainstorming what materials I should get and use. In the end, I grabbed a memo board, construction papers, brass fasterners and magnets off the shelves.

I enjoy the thrill of making models.

NYP sent 4 teams. 2 teams from SCL (LS), one from SCL (C) the other from SEG. Ms Nilar was really punctual. We agreed to meet at Buona Vista Mrt at 7.30am and she was there since 7.10am. Wow! But we were late. Fiona, Daniel and I only arrived at 7.55am.

Yesika and I presented to 2 judges. Well the first presentation with Dr Yeung didn't go quite well. He asked us about chiral centres and how we could tell if the OH group is above the plane or behind.

The second judge, Dr Lai, was impressed by our presentation. He understood the difficulties that undermine in the discovery of new drugs from Natural Products. He was also amazed by the model that I made. He said I could be more convincing if I find out what amino acid the efflux pump is made up of.

NUS only gives away 6 awards. Platinum, Pallidium, Nickel and 3 honorary awards among the 34 participating teams from Junior Colleges and Polytechnics. I was surprised that our poster received the honorary award. I'm so happy!! We were the only team from NYP that were selected within the top 6 poster.
